22 The LORD said to Moses,
23 "Tell Aaron and his sons, `This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
24 "` "The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace."'
27 "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

Reflection

Good Words (6:22–23)

In many churches, the pastor ends the Sunday worship service with a benediction, a word of blessing that reminds people of God’s goodness. One benediction that many pastors use can be found in this passage, in the very words that God gives to Moses and Aaron. In God’s grace, He commands the leaders of His people to speak this blessing over the community so that they always know they have a God who loves them, protects them, and is with them. Our God knows that we are prone to discouragement and doubt and that in times of suffering we tend to forget about His faithfulness in the past. This benediction is an encouragement to trust in a God whose love never fails.

What kind of benediction does your pastor give during your Sunday worship service? How does it bless and encourage you for the week ahead?

Blessed People (6:24–27)

These words of blessing are deliberately positioned after strict commands concerning cleansing from sin and commitment to God. The purpose of this cleansing and commitment is so that God’s people will be able to experience His goodness and presence. This means that the blessings of God’s protection, grace, favor, and peace are not unconditional; they are covenant blessings that will be revoked if the Israelites break their promise to God and turn away from Him in disobedience and rebellion. The only reason the church today receives these same blessings is because Jesus lived the perfect life on our behalf and established a new covenant by His blood. He took on the punishment for our sins so that we could enjoy the blessings of His righteousness.

Reflect on God’s blessings in your life. In what ways has He protected you, been gracious to you, and given you peace?

A letter to God

Father, thank you for the mercy and love You have poured out into my life. I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. Thank you for hearing me and forgiving me. Help me to be more committed to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen
